Vsevolod Vasilievich Perekalin and his classmates at the Department of Organic Chemistry of the Herzen Pedagogical Institute, St Petersburg, Russia, first synthesized Phenibut in Russia in 1960’s. Phenibut was known as phenigamma in early publications.

The medication was used in ‘cosmonauts’ medical kits on Russian space flights because of reports of enhanced reassuring effects and cognition.

Uses of Phenibut
